California Gold Rush and the Birth of San Francisco

In 1844 the settlement of Yerba Buena was pretty small...composed of maybe 20 houses, an outpost of the Hudson's Bay Company, a grocer or two, carpenter's shop and blacksmith. And there were bars, of course. In 1847, a year after Captain Montgomery raised the American flag in Portsmouth Square, the name was changed to San Francisco. Then on January 24, 1848, something happened that would catapult the enclave towards becoming one of the most important and interesting cities in America.
