Friends Of The Urban Forest/Greening Up the Cityscape

Pros: Non-profit committed to making SF more aesthetic and healthful with tree planting and management programs
Cons: Low income neighborhoods suffer most from lack of trees
Best For: Projects that really make a difference

Friend of the Urban Forest

Since 1981 Friends of the Urban Forest has taken on neighborhood tree planting projects, beautifying the city for residents and visitors. Even the birds are singing FUF's praises.

Every year about 1,000 new trees get planted. Neighbors get together to organize, FUF secures permits, selects trees, arranges for concrete to be broken apart and removed and then residents and volunteer FUF gardeners get together for tree planting and a communal meal.

Tree care, tree tours, pruning workshops and youth programs are all on the non-profit's agenda and a very special project is in the works. 2012 By 2012 strives to plant 2,012 trees in and around schoolyards in the city by the end of 2012. How cool is that?
