Udupi Palace/Mission District

Pros: Authentic Southern Indian cuisine, reasonably priced
Cons: No credit cards accepted
Best For: Unique culinary experience

Udupi is located on the Southwest coast of India, in the state of Karnataka, and its cuisine is very distinctive. Masala dosa, a thin rice crepe filled with spiced potatoes and onion is a signature dish of the region. Udupi Palace on Valencia St. serves this stuff up with a hefty dose of congenial Indian grace and warmth.

Pass on the supper-club like ambiance of the fancier Indian restaurants in the city, spend a heck of a lot less, and leave happy!
Menu Faves:
Medhu Vada (fried lentil donuts served with sambar, a veggie stew with tamarind and spices, and chutney)
Uthappam (Indian pizza-like flatbread) topped with onion and pepper
Badam Halwa (ground almonds cooked in sugar and ghee) for dessert
And they make a mean Mango Lassi.
