The San Remo Hotel/North Beach

Pros: Family run hotel, built in 1906
Cons: No phones or tv in rooms
Best For: A guesthouse vibe close to FIsherman's Wharf and North Beach sidewalk cafes

San Remo HotelThe San Remo Hotel was built right after the Earthquake and Fire of 1906. The old-fashioned, charming penthouse with a rooftop garden and view, is the best deal in town. Book this way in advance. All other rooms share a hall bath, guesthouse-style. At ground level, Fior d'Italia serves Italian food, on the expensive side, but hey, it's right there.
