California Academy of Sciences/Golden Gate Park

Pros: 10 years of renovation and $500 million later, a masterpiece is revealed
Cons: $29 per adult admission
Best For: Design and content

California Academy of Sciences

Architect Renzo Piano has designed a remarkable piece of sustainable architecture, crowned with a 2.5 acre living roof, planted with 1.7 million native plants. Inside exhibits include a 4-story rainforest, aquarium, and a planetarium show, included in the price of admission. There are penguin feedings, and cafe feedings for humans. The Academy Cafe is pretty darn wonderful, and then there's the swanky Moss Room downstairs.

The California Academy of Sciences has a mission, to "explore, explain and protect". Be sure to take a stroll before or after your visit, in the Music Concourse, across from the main entrance, where 3 delightful fountains have recently been restored.

Noteworthy: The building is LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
