Tartine Bakery and Cafe/Mission District

Pros: One of the greats
Cons: Waiting on line and hard to find a seat at peak times
Best For:The exceptional fare and neighborhood vibe

We all wish we had a bakery this good in our neighborhood. Tartine Bakery sets the standard for commitment to organic, local ingredients and it is no surprise that owners Eliabeth Prueitt and Chad Robertson found themselves the recipient of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Pastry Chef/2008.

In the morning the ovens deliver us fragrant croissants and irresistible breakfast pastries. The aromatic organic coffee comes from Four Barrel Coffee on Valencia Street and soon after opening, the communal table is full. Stay at home dads with strollers and laptops, women in suits, making the habitual pit-stop on the way downtown, and neighborhood foodies, convene, happy consumers of Tartine's wares.
In the afternoon the bread starts happening. Using locally milled organic flour and sea salt, loaves fresh out of the oven are available after 5pm Wednesday through Sunday. "Fresh bread for dinner...toast for breakfast" is a quote from their website.

Hot pressed sandwiches, seasonal tarts and cakes and other assorted treats make choices impossible. People seem to leave with much more than they intended to purchase. But they are never disappointed.
