Muir Beach Overlook/ Mill Valley/ North Bay

Pros: Breathtaking Northern California setting
Cons: Fog and wind hit this spot hard
Best For: A sunny walk on a coastal promontory

Muir Beach Overlook

Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco and you are on Hwy 101. Heading north means spectacular scenery. Bayside towns, redwood forests, and well-maintained roads wind through some of the most sought after sights this country has to offer.

It's easy to pass right by the small sign, Muir Beach Overlook. That would be a mistake, as a stroll out to the very tip of the promontory along a fenced-in dirt path, is a real treat. Any time of the day, if the fog is lifted, provides awe-inspiring views. There are a couple of picnic tables up there and several historic military base end stations to check out.
