Vichy Springs Resort/Ukiah

Pros: A real getaway, two hours north of San Francisco
Cons: None, unless de-stressing is a bad thing
Best For: The naturally warm, effervescent mineral baths

VIchy Springs Resort
Just two hours north of San Francisco, Vichy Springs Resort beckons. Since 1854 folks have been coming to bathe here. There are outside stone tubs and indoor tubs in private bathhouses, all of which may be filled up with 90 degree carbonated mineral water for soaking. Here is a picture of a guest, communing with water while his tub fills. No, he is not dead, just very relaxed.

Other spring-fed options include the communal hot soaking pool, and during the late Spring, Summer and early Fall months, the olympic-sized mineral pool is open as well for swimming.

These waters are remarkably similar to the springs found in Vichy, France and are known to be therapeutic for those suffering from skin disorders, nervous conditions, arthritis and rheumatic ailments. Plus, if all you're looking for is a quick fix for the stress of daily living, look no further. This is mecca.

There are rooms or cottages to choose from, and the cottages come with fully equipped kitchens for cooking up good food after a healthy soak. Include in your stay, a short hike to a surprising destination, through oak-studded hills, as the resort encompasses 700 acres of protected land.

Continental breakfast is included in the room rate.

Noteworthy:Famous past visitors include Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, Jack London, and Presidents Grant, Harrison and Teddy Roosevelt
