When Peggy Smith (formerly with Chez Panisse) and Sue Conley (Bette's Oceanview Diner) started making cheese in 1997, the American Cheese Society awards began to accumulate. Take for instance the ever popular Mt Tam. Made with organic milk from the nearby Straus Family Dairy, it's a triple-cream winner that helped put Cowgirl Creamery on the international artisanal cheese map. You can buy their cheeses and other stellar offerings from around the world, at their shop in the Ferry Building. For cheese nuts, book a space in a cheese tasting class, at their production facility in Point Reyes Station or Petaluma. Check their website for the schedule.
