Golden Gate Park

Pros: Over 1,000 acres of park, conceptualized in 1870
Cons: Not very safe at night
Best For: It's museums and scenic beauty

Stow LakeField Engineer William Hammond Hall mapped out the park site in 1870, but when Scotsman John McLaren took over as Park Superintendent in 1889, the real transformation began. First job: how to tame the ocean dunes which composed 3/4 of the parkland. By 1879, 155,000 trees had already been planted, including blue gum eucalyptus, Monterey pine and cypress. McLaren was so beloved by the city of San Francisco, that after his retirement he was permitted to live in McLaren Lodge, the house within the park, which was built to house him, until he died in 1943 at 96 years of age.
